Amanda in the Veranda, part hard to remember kirjoitti: Fagerholm kirjoitti: I am a Finn and left Finland exactly because I found it dull, cold (both in terms of climate as well as atmosphere), overly patriotic, jealous, and what not. Still, I myself am a typical reserved Finn by nature and have always wished I was more open, warm and expressive. It surely took time to get used to the empty talking, the kissing on the cheek, the exhausting use of expressions and all that "non Finnish stuff". I still am not great in those though :) But lately I've also thought that as long as I will live according to the value of respecting all human beings, it is okay to be me - the more silent listener type of person, who still enjoys being with people even if my own way: building lasting friendships instead of having a large entourage, engaging in deep conversations 2on2 rather than mingling in the crowds and listening instead of blabbering all over the place. A Portuguese guy was just telling me how he found the Finns he'd met on a study abroad program horribly cold people (very elegantly in my face...). I do agree and I wish our society would be more open and caring to the outside world as well. It is so much nicer to reside in a country with smiling faces! During occasional visits home I feel like shaking some people to get a bigger reaction. Then again, these machoish overly loud and confident "look-at-me-I'm-so-cool" latin guys irritate me as much! If I return (there are many good reasons to do so) someday, it will be harsh. Let's just hope that by then there is some change in the air. And btw. change never happens by moaning and groaning. I'd like to see some more examples of what in the expats' opinion makes Finland such a horrible place to live and what could you personally do about it. Maybe you could detach yourselves from the position of a victim and try to initiate something positive. After living in Sri Lanka for a while I got used to smiling to everyone regardless if I know them or not. This is a principle I try to hold on to and it was great to notice that smiles actually are returned, even in Finland :) (it's cool to notice the sudden delight in peoples eyes after a surprising gesture of a stranger) Now I live in an ex socialist country typically very closed from foreign influence. I study their (very difficult) language and live with local people. It is much easier to live here now as I have some understanding on their reasoning and way of life. If ever I get fed up with this place, I'll surely know to leave somewhere else. I wonder why I never meet these finns... Hey, you have guts to say what you said, facing reality means first kneeling down, then crying, then standing up and building REAL STRENGTH. Suursiivous. I have a singing voice, this means whenever I talk or laugh people hear me, even more in Finland, but I have no problems with people who are shy or reserved, I can do all the talking if needed. Foreigners have a hard time dealing with the RUDE, HOSTILE, ANGRILY STARING PEOPLE, JEALOUS...NOT WITH THE SHY. That s the common excuse, we are shy, no, SOME OF YOU ARE SHY, and no problem with those, but the hostility, the passive aggressiveness, the jealousy, that is hardcore, that s HEROIN. And some finns, JUNKIES. You wonder what finns can do to make this society better. TALK and shun those who are abusive, rude... Be brave and spread the word, that s what you can do. First Amanada they could start with abandoning this idiotic slogan saying Se on lottovoitto...and we know the rest of that crap. Isaw some insurance company ad on a huge poster last week and even my Finnish husband did laugh at that. His words were "they kept repeating it so often that some Finns started to belive it. But only those who never travelled or lived abroad". Lottery winning - that's naurettava. More like loosing all your money on a one night out in casino (in case of Finland might be kapakka:). |

It's like winning in a lottery to be born in Finland... but to get 4 correct you win also, some 20€ :)About the loud talking. I was in a sport pub with our american clients yesterday and they were talking (almost yelling) so loud that the manager of the pub came to our twice and the 2nd time he said that we have to go if they don't talk less loud. I thought that you get thrown out from pub doing something totally different.. |

He would never complain about any noise afterwards. |

It is a sport pub where people watch sport. They want to focus on sport, not the personal life of some tourist talking VERY loudly without a break. And when the people cheered for goal he was shouting his story even louder that his friend could hear it... |

| I really don't understand where all that hate comes from, my personal experinece living in US for the last 20 years and being a Finn born and raised, I think that some people just aren't happy with there own personal life and that's why they complain about evertyhing the country, people etc. You make your own bed so do speak... Everything so far that I've read is so not true. First, what ever country you live in you respect the local customs, like i do when I game to US I did not expect locals here to speak my language, or do what I was use to. Secondly if youre not happy it's simple go back where you game from...Finns are shy not rude, I've met way more rude people here. Like I said every country has it's goods and it's bads. But it really irritates me to here all the crap specially since most people who move to Finland as a permanent resident gets all the medical etc. benefits. Try to do that in US. I can't wait to come back home. |

I don t think any foreigner here expects to make it in Finland speaking in english, but in the beginning we need to communicate in english but for those with a finnish parent. And it s not an easy language so it takes time. Everybody though eventually learns it, so there are not major problems in the long run, foreign accent is always perceptible though. Number two some finns are shy. But OTHER FINNS ARE SIMPLY RUDE. Many of us do not expect to stay here forever, at all, temporary residents I d say, except for those who have put down roots here, have a family... not so many. Yes, if we don t like it here we can go back where we game from. If you re read the posts most of them are about interaction or better put not interaction at all with finnish people, not about the language, not about the weather, very few about food... IT IS THE PEOPLE THAT MATTERS and always will be. |

Go home and better stay there stuffing yourself with ruisleipä and maito (or kalia). Most Finns can't live anywhere else anyway. |

| Cmon people. If all you've seen is 1) your home country, which you HATE, plus 2) one single other country you decided to move to and you hate it now EVEN MORE... it really isn't hard to connect dots: - your home country wasn't the problem in the 1st place - no matter where else you'd gone, equally disappointed you became anyway Pull yourself together people and stop thinkin the problem is with your country, fellow citizens, etc. |

Through the bottle neck? Or with the rope? Get real: who complains about OWN country or other countries here? It's Finland that sucks. |

| the worst thing about finland is the lack of choice and the amount of control the system has over its people. finland is an incredibly controlling country and a nanny state and capitalism at its worst. for example you have to give that henkilötunnus everywhere you go. even if you want to deposit money into your own bank account.. what is that all about. everything is ridiculously expensive and what is more no one complains .. unbelievable brain washing. it is incredibly isolatin and difficult to live here and i would leave in a second had i not family commitments. | |
